The Long Take
I’m a fan of the long take. It takes tremendous confidence for a director to commit to what’s happening right in front of their eyes. For me, the specific issue is pacing: are you sure the rhythm of this particular scene will cut well with the scene you shot two days ago?
If you commit to the long take, you can’t cut out of it, after all.
Pacing within the frame is how you establish the pace of the overall edit. I have worked with too many directors that get focused on the dialogue and ignore the quality and speed of the action that the actor is taking. The end result is a scene that feels plastic.

“There is nothing more magical than visiting a different world via a really good piece of literature. You stare at clusters of tiny black symbols on a page and yet some how you perceive such a visually dynamic array of imagery. Emotion takes over sense, and this new reality emerges and envelops you. For that brief moment in time laws of space and time it self loose precedence and you are swept away to the writer’s land of the imaginary.”
